Third World Newsreel, a media arts organization that specializes in social issue media by or about BIPOC communities, recently released Joel Katz’s THE #1 BUS CHRONICLES.
The #1 Bus Chronicles uses a small sociological microcosm — a bus stop on an industrial highway in New Jersey — to intimately portray some of the most marginalized lives in America today — the working poor, the recently incarcerated, and immigration asylum seekers. In startlingly intimate encounters, strangers share hopes and dreams as well as stories of resiliency, suffering, and loss. Many are in states of transition, struggle, or waiting for change. Winner of Best Documentary at the Golden Door International Film Festival in Jersey City.

Joel Katz is a filmmaker and educator whose work encompasses documentary, non-fiction, and memoir/essay form. His best-known film Strange Fruit, about the history and legacy of the anti-lynching protest song first made famous by Billie Holiday, is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Since 1996 he has been a Professor in the Media Arts Department of New Jersey City University, and in 2008 he was a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Germany. Joel has served on the Board of Directors of Third World Newsreel since 1999 and has been on the Advisory Board of the Black Maria Film Festival since 2011. Visit https://www.onierafilms.com.
